Using the Architecture
Training | Using the Architecture | Planning Process
The NoVA ITS Architecture can be used for many purposes from gathering information about a particular subsystem to planning and generating requirements for a project. This page describes the different ways this website may be used. A tutorial on using the architecture is available on the left side of the page.
How I can use the architecture to explore new ITS project ideas?
As VDOT-NoVA Project Managers consider ITS deployments in the region, it
is important that regional implications and possibilities be considered.
Because it was developed using a collaborative approach, VDOT-NoVA’s
Regional ITS Architecture serves as a valuable repository of the various
ITS-related needs of stakeholders in the Northern Virginia region. The regional
operating concept tab, which describes a high-level vision for ITS in the
region, and the market packages tab, which identifies the services desired
by the region, are two locations of interest on the architecture website
for project managers developing new project ideas.

I haven't secured funding for my project idea. How can the NoVA
ITS Architecture help me get the funding?
Reviewing VDOT-NoVA's Regional ITS Architecture website for project
ideas and validation, is a critical step in identifying the "big picture";
that is, where does the specific project idea fit within the overall regional
ITS system, and what are the potential interconnects between the project
and other VDOT-NoVA ITS systems. A simple, non-resource intensive approach
to utilizing the architecture is recommended. The broader the spectrum of
support for a project; the greater is its chance of being funded.

I have funding for my project. How does the NoVA ITS Architecture
help me with project implementation?
The ideal use of the NoVA ITS Architecture is to define Project Architectures
when funding for a project has been identified or budgeted. Based on the
stakeholders that are involved in the project, the project manager can use
the NoVA Architecture and/or the Metropolitan Washington Regional ITS Architecture
as a starting point. For developing the detailed project architecture, it
is recommended that the project managers use the NoVA Architecture Turbo
Database and follow the system's engineering process as required by FHWA
Rule 940. The most important tool for VDOT NoVA project managers at this
stage is the Rule 940 Checklist. The checklist is a guide for project managers
to determine what documents, steps, analysis need to be developed over
the life of the project. A blank checklist can be downloaded here.
See How-To Tutorial (Part III)
My project has been implemented. How can I contribute my project
architecture to the NoVA ITS Architecture?
It is important that the NoVA ITS Architecture definition remains accurate.
As each project is implemented or deployed, the "as deployed"
project architecture should be submitted to the NoVA Operations Planning
and Programming (P&P) staff. The NoVA Operations P&P team is responsible
for the update and maintenance of this architecture along with ensuring
that there is consistency between the NoVA architecture and the Metropolitan
Washington Regional ITS Architecture. To ensure that the architecture reflects
the updated and current NoVA projects, the project manager can send architecture
details by selecting the Submit Project Architecture (example) button in
the NoVA architecture website.
See How-To Tutorial (Part IV)
How is the NoVA Architecture used in the overall ITS and Operations
planning process?
VDOT operations planning is a process that involves project definition,
review, prioritization, approval, funding allocation, and incorporation
into the program annual investment plan. The path a project follows in the
planning process is dependent on the funding source being sought for the
project. However, the VDOT-NoVA's operations project planning process
identifies all the major steps that each project must take during its planning
life-cycle.

Are there any training courses that VDOT provides for ITS Project
Planning and Use of the Architecture?
VDOT NoVA District occasionally schedules a day-long hands-on training course
on Using NoVA ITS Architecture. The course is intended for ITS project managers,
planners, and system developers who plan, develop, and deploy ITS projects
in the Northern Virginia region. The curriculum is highly interactive and
will include lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises. The training
classes are conducted at the VDOT NoVA District Office located at 14685
Avion Parkway, Chantilly, VA 20151-1104.
